For some years it has been an offence to cold call, or cold fax residential numbers which have been registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or the Fax Preference Service (FPS). Any business calling consumers needs to be aware of this, and can be fined £5000 for each and every violation.
From June 25th 2004 the same protection was extended to business telephone and fax numbers. An increasing number of businesses are registering with TPS/FPS. There are also signs that the enforcement of this is being stepped up in response to government pressure.
